It’s no secret to those who know me that I am a big Apple fan and I am not ashamed to say that last Thursday I was following the Apple iPhone OS 4 event.
On the whole, people responded very well to the 100+ new user features, which were revealed during the event, but there are a few which stand out - particularly to me.
Multitasking
One of the most highly anticipated and speculated features. iPhone OS 4 will allow users to open multiple apps and seamlessly switch between them; using a docking system similar to Mac OS X.
For example, users will now be able to browser a website in Safari whilst taking a Skype call.
Unfortunately, multitasking will only be available to 3GS users, leaving 3G users without; could this be a clever act of marketing by Apple to sell more 3GS phones?
Folders
I know it is hard to imagine, but there are some iPhone users who manage to fill up all eight homescreens on the iPhone OS 3. Taking this into account, the OS 4 will enable users to organise their apps by sorting them into folders.
“You used to be able to see 180 apps on your phone, now it’s over 2000” Steve Jobs, during the keynote. - That’s a lot of apps!
Improved Mail
The iPhone Mail app has not been updated since 2007, so this update has been a long time coming. The new iPhone Mail app will provide threaded messages, the ability to open attachments using other apps and a unified inbox for all of your accounts.
Custom background
Users have been jailbreaking their iPhone’s since the very beginning in order to apply custom background images rather than the default black.
The recent release of the iPad already shows off customisable backgrounds, and Apple will be bringing this feature across to the iPhone OS 4 when it is released in the summer.
What about the iPad?
Seeing as the iPad runs off the same operating system as the iPhone, iPad will also be getting an upgrade to OS 4. However the upgrade will not be available until this autumn, so we will have to wait a few months before being able to multitask on our iPads.
