Moby dilemma

I am now free of contract and in the market for a new phone. But which way do I go…? I currently own a 2nd gen 3G iPhone, and I must say I absolutely love it! So, the obvious next move would be to treat myself to the iPhone 4… Or is it?

With the recent news surrounding the antenna problems should I hold fire? More to the point, can I actually get my hands on one at the moment?

To add to this quandary my wife decided to boycott the 'designers' essential must have piece of iKit, opting for an alternative solution. Admittedly she picked up a bargain and now sports the new Samsung Galaxy S… which actually looks very similar to iPhone (until you handle it that is). 1GHz processor for fast internet connection; 5 megapixel camera and full HD video, running on the Android platform. More annoyingly it supports flash!!! Grhhh.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what gives at Apple's surprise news conference tomorrow before I make a decision.

It's game on!

With a whole host of new, fancy games heading to the iPad, including Super Mario Kart, it is time for reflection on games and consoles that were hailed as ‘the next best thing’, in times past.

Computer games first came into existence in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until 1972 (the year I entered the world) when the first home video game console (Magnavox Odyssey) changed the way we played forever!

Along came Pong; the Atari arcade game that the world embraced. Of course, as popular as the game was it was only the start; pretty soon programmable games and cartridge-based consoles garnered the market - hello wood grained effect plastic!

However, 1977 saw a console crash, with no real winners – until Atari brought out Space Invaders in 1980. Guinness World Records 2008 edition quoted Space Invaders as the most successful arcade shooting game; Japan still has arcades which house special ‘Space Invader Only’ areas. You can even purchase a Space Invader to compliment your phone or vinyl graphics for your wall space.

Not many video games have had such a long lasting impact, of course, with each generation of console came a new hero; Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros., Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokémon and Xbox’s Halo franchise, to name a few.

With consoles becoming more powerful, and with the rapid development of technology all popular machines now incorporate hard drives, Blu-ray discs, HD DVD support, online access, downloadable games and infra-red remotes.

Machines are fighting to distinguish themselves, offering better graphics and developing their own games. The Apple iPad is no different, trying to rise above the rest with motion sensor technology and its hand held design, but this isn’t new and it won’t really drag people away from the TV based consoles.

Currently, the only thing that will shake up the market is a new game... or perhaps it's a new console that smacks a virtual reality solution – Watch out Apple!

Appy Days!

Currently my favourite apps are anything that makes my 10 month old boy, Jensen, "appy" – at this moment that’s Talking Carl 2! (An annoying app that shouts back at you repeating everything you say.) Did you know you can actually get a bunch of iPhones installed with Carl2 to talk to each other? - Who's the big kid now I ask!
If I was to get a new app it would most likely be because a friend or colleague suggested it, but generally it's a quick flick through the app store at night before catching some Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Apps are still a novelty to me at the moment as there are new ones every day; I am dreading the day that companies learn how to app spam, without you paying £2.50 for the privilege that is! I am excited about the possibility of apps being interchangeable between the iPhone and iPad, the graphics will be better and the screen larger - if I ever get one I will make sure Jensen cleans his sticky fingers first!
